Wall Street
I just happened to see the movie "Wall Street", only recently. Since the current happenings went well with the plot, it made an interesting viewing.
It has been some time since I saw a movie that had some powerful and interesting dialogues. I thought Michalel Douglas's performance was terrific, and only later found that he took the Oscar for this role; not bad!
Since I couldnt write down the dialogues, I went to IMDB and their collection had some of the dailagues I too liked. Here they are:
Gordon Gekko: You're walking around blind without a cane, pal. A fool and his money are lucky enough to get together in the first place.
Bud Fox: How much is enough?
Gordon Gekko: It's not a question of enough, pal. It's a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn't lost or made, it's simply transferred from one perception to another.
Bud Fox: Sun-tzu: If your enemy is superior, evade him. If angry, irritate him. If equally matched, fight, and if not split and reevaluate.

Different points of views within and outside India!!
When Obama was winning the presidential race in the US, we have started debating about what he will or will not do with H1B visas and what would be his position on outsourcing.
When UK enacts the new points-based immigration system greatly affecting the job opportunities of non-EU immigrants, we feel we are being targeted.
When the Malaysian government puts Indians without proper papers in jail and also lathi charge hindus protesting against demolition of temples, we tell that it is not right.
When the Srilankan government kills innocent tamils, we want to go to any extent to stop that and want the Indian army to go there like they did in liberating Bangladesh.
Well obviously we are right in all the above cases and might ask whats wrong in these stands? After all the world is like a global village now, we are all living in the days of global economy. The share market of one country creates similar plus or minus movements in other countries, as if the shares follow the sun going over each country. We want free trade across all the countries and have WTO to look after and facilitate that. We want to get rid of trade embargoes, economic apartheid so on and so forth.
But are we really right to talk about all this, when our own house is not in order.
Our great friends in Maharashtra always consider attacking outsiders as one of their fundamental right. We have read that a few decades back, south Indians were thought of as people taking up the jobs of the locals and were attacked and many were forced to leave. Today the heirs of those attackers are targeting the north Indians. When the fact of the matter is that the locals are not willing to do some of the jobs these folks do; after all it is hard labour we are talking about. After all every citizen of this country has the fundamental right to pursue the business or job of his choice anywhere in the country.
Then there are our friends forever in Karnataka. Whether Veerappan abducted some one or there is no rain fall or whatever, they think it is all because of the Tamils and start attacking tamil people, vehicles with TN registration and theatres showing tamil films. If Rajini and Kamal call on Jayalalitha during her Cauvery fast then the films of these actors must be banned. If some actor goes to Neyveli on the Cauvery issue, then he must be debarred from acting. They dont even care to implement Supreme Court orders
Then there is Kerala with Mullaperiyar issue, then there is Andhra with Palar issue, then there is Bengal, Gujarat etc. Like this we can go on and on in this topic. But the fact of the matter is when it comes to the international issues, we want the countries of the world to be understanding and accommodating; but when it comes to domestic issues we would immediately raise the "son of the soil" and "insider vs outsider" slogans.
World is a global village and ideally everyone should have equal chance at everything. That is where we should aim to go. Americans cannot and should not stop outsourcing and Indians would continue to use American brands from Google to Yahoo, Ford to GM, Coke to Pepsi, HP to Dell, Microsoft to Sun, CNN to HBO. All those Chines goods would continue to flood your markets as long as you cannot make them cheaper in your countries.
When that is the reality of the day and more so under the backdrop of an unprecedented global economic slowdown (or is it actually a recession?), what should we be doing within the country. We should not think about tolerating people from other states, we should actually learn to accommodate them and consider it as normal. Come on folks, it is time to grow up for all of us!
Cricket can teach us a thing or two in this. When it is possible for the tamils to love Dhoni, the bengalis to like Yuvraj, the maharastrians to admire Laxman, the kanndiga's to like Sachin and the telugus to support Ishant, why cant the same spirit be extended to all other things as well.
I am not sure of what the common man thinks about all these issues, but I want him to act in the right way before it is too late.

திருக்குறள் பாதிப்பில் உருவான கவிதைகள்
திருக்குறள் பாதிப்பில் நான் எழுதிய கவிதைகளை இங்கே தொகுக்க உத்தேசம். பரிமேழகர் முதல் கலைஞர் சுஜாதா வரை பலரின் உரைகளைப் படித்து அலசியபின் என்னுள் தோன்றிய கவிதைகள் இவை.
நான் தற்சமயம் கவிதை எழுதுவதில்லை! இவை என்னால் தொன்னூறுகளில் எழுதப்பட்டவை. சுமார் பத்துப் பனிரெண்டு வருடங்களுக்குப்பின் இவற்றை தொகுக்கும்போது வார்த்தைகளில் மாற்றம் செய்வது தவிர்க்க முடியாததாகிவிட்டது! எனினும், பொருளை மாற்றவில்லை!! இவை என்னால் புனையப்பட்ட உரையும் அல்ல. சிலவற்றின் தரம் சரியில்லை என ஒதுக்கியும் இருக்கிறேன்.

Sachin Top Run Getter in Tests and ODIs
Today Sachin has become the highest run getter in Tests and he already holds that record in ODIs as well. I am not sure whether there was any other player holding these two records together in the recent past.
He now has scored over 28,000 international runs (12,000+ in tests and 16,000+ in ODIs) including 81 hundreds (39 in tests and 42 in ODIs).
Looking back at his test record, I would have liked Sachin to have scored some more runs against the South Africans, he averages just over 35 per innings against them and that is his lowest against any time. Other than that he has one of the best test records ever scoring almost at the same rate in home and away matches and in fact scoring more hundreds away than at home.
Before he retires from tests, I would like Sachin to complete some formalities against the minnows: a hundred in Zimbabwe, the only country where he has not scored a test 100 and complete 1000 runs against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, so that he would have 1000 or more runs against all test playing countries. Since Zimbabwe is not currently playing tests, I doubt whether this would happen at all.
When did I become a Sachin fan? It was in 1989. He was in news before his first tour to Pakistan and I thought this guy is the most hyped player and I really didnt like to hear anything more about him. Then I saw live, an unofficial one day match where he hit my then favorite leggie Abdul Qadir for four sixes and from that moment on till this day when he overtook Lara, I just admire Sachin and he has given me so many wonderful memories watching him.
Since he has overtaken test record, I just want to list the top 5 test innings that I like of him:
- 119* v England at Manchester, 1990
- 114* v Australia at Perth, 1992
- 136 v Pakistan at Chennai, 1999
- 193 v England at Leeds, 2002
- 155* v Australia at Chennai, 1998

Dream Cricket Teams
During Don Bradman's birth centenary (he was born on August 27, 1908) I wanted to see what was the dream team he chose. Though most of us wouldnt have seen most of the members of that team play, what was interesting for Sachin's fans like me was the fact that Sachin Tendulkar was the only current international cricketer to have made that team; even Shane Warne didn't make it.
It is sad that we still say that Sachin is not good enough and he is being compared to lesser mortals. Even in the recently concluded Australian series, he made lot of runs in both one day and tests and just because of his one poor test series in Sri Lanka, which happens to be one his poorest, we are ready to dump. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

India in Olympics
Lets be honest here. How many Indians are showing decent interest in what the Indian athletes are doing in the olympics? We see the medals tally in the news and simply pass some sarcastic comment to go with the flow. Most of us feel that showing any interest in Indians in olympics is "not cool"; its not as same as following IPL or F1 or EPL.
Yes. I do follow cricket a lot and I am a die hard cricket fan. But that has not forced me to show the least interest in the Olympics. Every time the Indian contingent goes to the Olympics, I do wish and want them to perform well and come back with medals and laurels. Afterall, it is the only event that truly unites the entire world. Even the FIFA world cup that has lot of fan following, would not evoke the same response from countries that are not ranked high enough, like India.
This is what we have done so far in the history of Olympics:
Gold in 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1980, Silver in 1960, and Bronze in 1968, 1972 for Hockey: (5-1-2)
Silver for Chintamani Kaur in 1948 for Scuplture Event in Art Contests
Bronze for Kha-Shaba Jadav in 1952 for Freestyle Bantamweight Wrestling
Bronze for Leander Paes in 1996 for Men's Singles Tennis
Bronze for Karnam Malleswari in 2000 for 69kg Women's Weightlifting
Silver for Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore in 2004 Double Trap Men Shooting
I remember watching live PT Usha missing out on the 400m bronze by one hundredth of a second in the LA olympics in 1984. Then that Paes bronze in the 1996 olympics in Atlanta and that epic semifinal against the eventual winner Agassi. After that in Athens I happened to watch live in TV, Rathore claiming that Silver.
For some reason even I was hoping for better performance and more medals and this is not just because of the media madness. Whenever an Indian is competing finals, I was watching them with so much of tension and anticipation. Whether it was our shooters or archers or wrestlers or the boxers. I saw live, the first Indian gold medal winning performance of Abinav and it was a great moment to see our national anthem being played in the olympics. It was the first time I am seeing that as we couldnt get to see India's last hockey gold presentation in LA.
Beyond this and the boxers, what was really disappointing was not that many of our guys and girls have not own medals, but the fact that they have performed below their individual best. You may not win medals in every event, but one should atleast strive to get their personal best, then go on to better the national mark, then a final spot and then aim to win the medal. Theres no harm if they aim straight to win the medal; but it is totally unacceptable when some one performs below their personal best. This is true with most of the athletes failing to qualify for the finals. There is no excuse for Anju George's three fouls in the long jump qualifiers. It would be a different story whether she would have cleared the qualification mark; but when you foul all attempts you never know.
So while we congratulated and danced with our first individual gold of Abhinav Bindra, lets not forget about olympics till the London version and come back with the same excuses. At this time one of the wrestlers Sushil Kumar has won the bronze and the boxer Vijender Kumar has assured himself of a medal. So this is our best result so far in olympics and even though this is not anywhere close to a decent performance, we can still hope that this would get better from here.
These are my thoughts/suggestions as to what we can do to become a better nation in olympic sports (for once lets not blame our government and the politicians and see what really can be done):
1) We the citizens of the country should take more interest in all other sports and whenever any India does well at the international competitions, we should make it a big news and offer our support to the sportsmen.
2) Media should do that same and support such sportsmen, by turning the spotlight on them, whenever they shine in the world arena. I didnt know that Abinav has own the world championship and I am ashamed of that.
3) Corporate companies should help these sportsmen by sponsoring them and we as the countrymen should support those companies that help such sponsors. If Samsung supports boxing in India and LG supports cricket, we must think about buying Samsung products more.
4) BCCI can share some of its fortunes and help the other sports bodies build infrastructure for their sports. BCCI can allot some space in their stadiums for smaller indoor sports like boxing, wrestling etc. After looking at the enthusiasm of the Bhiwani boys in boxing, I wish I had money to support these kids achieving their dream of winning an olympic medal.

இந்த நல்ல கதையை பி வாசுவைத் தவிர வேறு யாரும் இவ்வளவு சொதப்பி இருக்க முடியாது. ரஜினி இந்த படத்தில் கிளைமாக்ஸில் மட்டும் வந்திருந்தால் போதும். மீதி சீனெல்லாம் அவர் இல்லாமலே அழகா எடுத்திருக்கலாம். ஆனா மெனெக்கட்டு ஒக்காந்து யோசிச்சு ரஜினிக்கு நாலு சீன் வேணுமேன்னு சொதப்பி இருக்கார் நம்ம பி வாசு. சந்திரமுகி பார்ட் 2, அண்ணாமலை பார்ட் 2 ரெண்டுமே ஓவர் . பஞ்ச் டயலாக் கருத்து, ரசிகர் கருத்து இதெல்லாம் தேவையில்லாமல் பேரைக் கெடுக்கும் விஷயங்கள்.

அடுத்தது மியூசிக். சாதா மியூசிக்லேயே எல்லா பாட்டும் ஹிட்டாகும் ரஜினி படத்துக்கு இப்படி ஒரு சோதனை. பாபாலேயே பாட்டு நல்லத்தான் இருந்திச்சு; ஆனா இங்கேயோ ரஜினி திரையில் வராத "சொல்லம்மா சொல்லம்மா" பாட்டு மட்டும் தான் நல்லாருக்கு. உதித் நாராயணன் சோதனைக்கு அப்பறம் இதுலே தலேர் மெஹந்தி. They are good singers in hindi / punjabi; but their style doesnt suit Rajini.
